New to Blogging?

Hey girls! Thursday, woo hoo! What a week… I swear I have napped every night after work {I iz lame}
Anyways, I have noticed a trend recently of girls asking me about how I started blogging, how to be successful etc. and unfortunately I don’t have all the answers. I literally started with zero people reading, and it was my therapy. I wrote to myself. HA! I am so humbled everyday by the sweet emails and comments I get, it is so surreal. I get so much out of blogging, I absolutely love it. And as it turns out, for some strange reason, you all read it! haha. Couldn’t tell you why, perhaps it is so you feel a leeetle better about your life, since mine is usually in shambles. HA! So, I don’t have the answers, BUT luckily for you, I have a bloggy friend Katie who wrote a fabulous guest post about starting to blog, and I thought it would be helpful for those of you who have been asking, and maybe those of you silently asking out there!
For the full post by Katie click here {it’s a really sweet, fantastic post, Katie you just melted my heart!}
Here are the great points (so great that I wanted to share) that Miss Katie made about getting connected:
—–

#1. Be yourself when you write!
Don’t just write about what you THINK others will want to read because people will see right through you. I’ve found that I can relate the most with people who write similar to how they would talk in real life…if that makes sense. It may take a while for you to learn to write like this, but that’s OK.
-Always remember your main purpose for making your blog in the first place….be true to yourself.
#2. Just keep writing.
-When you first start out, readers want to get to know you more so it helps if you post regularly. It will not only help get your blog out there, but it will help you feel more comfortable with posting.
#3. Don’t be afraid to comment on blogs that you love to read or that inspire you.
-Is there a blog out there that you just LOVE to read everyday? TELL THEM and follow it. That is how relationships and friendships are formed…don’t be shy!! The more consistent you are with commenting, the more they will understand how much you enjoy their blog and will visit yours. 🙂
#4. Certain bloggers have what they call “link-up’s” that you can participate in….PARTICIPATE if the topic intrigues you.
-This is a great way to expand your readers because other bloggers will link up and be able to read your post from the link-up. You should also visit other people’s blogs that link-up and comment letting them know that you found them through the link-up!
#5. THIS MAY BE THE MOST IMPORTANT PIECE OF ADVICE I HAVE LEARNED: Make sure on your Blogger profile that you have your EMAIL ADDRESS added. If you only have your web page added, you will NOT be able to receive any emails back from people who you have commented on their blog.
-When I first started blogging, I would comment on people’s blogs and not understand why I would never get a response. Do they hate me?!?! is what I thought. No, THIS was the reason. It’s so easy to change and will really help you connect with other bloggers!

See? Doesn’t she have the smartz? PLL back now…

I seriously encourage anyone who has an inkling of wanting to start a blog to do it! There is a niche for everyone out there, you just gotta be yourself and find it! OK now I am sounding like a Hallmark card…but seriously- I had NO idea how much a part of my life this silly little blog I started would become.

Hope this helped someone out there! I just thought it was fantastic!

For you non-bloggers, just readers: sorry for the dry post, maybe you should start a blog? 😉
xoxo

  1. Thank you for posting this! I just started a blog a couple months ago and have tried to stick with it to gain followers but sometimes it can be discouraging. I needed to hear these tips! Thanks PLL, I love your blog.. it is definitely a daily read!

  2. ashley says:

thanks for this! my blog is just a baby and any tips on how to make it better are pretty wonderful to me. 🙂

  3. I just started blogging about a month ago and do sometimes feel like I'm taking to myself!! But, I love it! Thanks for a great post.

  4. ty says:

I tell everyone I know that if you don't blog, you just don't understand 🙂

  5. I love your blog. It's so fun and refreshing and I'm so happy my friend Erin (@gracehenry) turned me on to it. Plus I'm an ADPi from Ohio State so that's a bonus. 🙂 Thanks for sharing your fun life! Heather

  6. Kelly says:

Great re-post!! And you're so right about blog "voice" I certainly didn't have a "voice" that sounded like me when I first started, it does take a while to obtain! I wish Blogger didn't have "no reply" as a default, sooo many new bloggers have no idea! Posts like this just get out the word though, thanks!! 🙂

  7. Lauren says:

That's awesome! 🙂 Great advice! Love your blog!

  8. Tricia says:

It's nice to get little "tidbits" of advice. As a semi-new blogger, (March counts right?) I've been trying to get my stuff "out there" and gather readers, and man is it a lot of work.
The one piece of advice that I (think) I don't really heed on this list is commenting on all of the blogs I love. Sometimes it's just so damn intimidating when they have like 920823094820 followers. I always think to myself, "They won't care because there are so many other commenters, I'm just a drop in the bucket" I guess better buck-up and start doing it so I can possibly make some more connections. Thanks girl!

  9. Katie says:

I may not know how to perfect le POOF or know how to make myself look flawless everyday like yourself, but DAMN can I make a list! haha thank you love for passing this along..I feel honored! 🙂

    Love ya cuteness
    KT

  10. Savannah says:

Girlie, you always say exactly what I need to hear. I just started blogging. Mainly becuase I love reading other people's blogs. It's therapy for sure. I wanted to start one during my last round of cancer, but didn't becauase I wasn't able. I hope this time around, I'll be able to blog through the sickness. So many people wanted to know so many things, it's just easier to blog about it. Thanks for being an inspiration. : )

  11. love love love your blog!!! makes me happy to read =)

  12. Bink says:

Great advice and it's hard to believe you weren't instantly successful overnight… I mean, the world was seriously lacking the poof until you came in with your gorgeous self.

  13. Blair says:

Al~ I've been following your blog for a long time now and have never commented. It's just so fun keeping up with you and other UK gals. I did want to let you know that I love reading it! And, I started a blog in January and can attest to the advice you gave here. It's therapeutic for sure and such a fun way to connect to others 🙂

  14. morganegrant says:

Hi boo! We're both playing Mommy right now. As a good mommy to be I'm commenting on your blog while he talks to my Mom aka Grandma on the phone. This has nothing to do with your post, but I think this is all good info. And duh your followers because your blog is amazeballs.

  41. Lindsey says:

duh you have a lot of followers*

  42. Gina says:

Yes, yes, yes, yes and yes. Great points. Also? I remember starting out and thinking I'd NEVER have 97 followers like one of my favorite blogs and now I have three times that many. I hope someday I am as successful as you! 🙂

  43. Jaima says:

Thank you thank you thank you! I just changed my profile to show my email! I had someone tell me that mine didn't show. Ugh, I'm a newbie and I totally don't write as much as I should. 🙁

  50. Jess says:

I have been blogging for like 5 years and still have about Zeroooo followers. I do it for myself I guess. But am starting my own business now so need to expand so this is very helpful! And btw I always check your blog and one of the main reasons is you are so real and relatable. Also seem so down to earth and hilarious! Love it!

  51. Newlymeds says:

this is so helpful!!! thank you!

  52. Emma says:

Hey, thanks for the comment on my blog 🙂
I'm not sure what you mean about the email address, though; maybe I'm just being stupid! It seems like it should be a helpful tip, but I don't quite understand it.

  53. You inspired me to start blogging, and I cant express how thankful I am that I did! This post was much needed..thank you!

  54. Great info! I'm about 2 months into my blog and it is so easy to get discouraged when you don't get any comments, but I am writing for ME!

P.S. still waiting for the recap of your big date! 🙂

  55. Kaylee says:

I absolutely love your blog. You seem like such a fun girl, a girly girl! I've never really had a "girly" girl in my life, so I guess, in a non-creepy way, I live what I missed vicariously through what you write. I had been following up on a friend's blog (she follows you) and I found yours. I finally decided to start blogging as a way to break out of my shell more. The husband said that no one would read it (so encouraging right) but I don't care. All of these tips have helped a ton. I'm just going to stick with it, if not for anyone else, for me. Anyhow, sorry to ramble, keep doing what you're doing, because your blog rocks.

    Best wishes!

  56. Relevé says:

I needed this! When you start a blog it feels like shouting into a void or being a total creeper. Thanks for the encouragement!

  57. Hilary says:

Ha! I agree…creeper/stalker is def how I felt when I began 'following' – definitely did that for a while before diving into my own blog. I agree with the voice point and am still looking to find that…as I talk to myself 😉 Thanks for sharing your tips – love this post!

  58. Carissa says:

Hi, Rachel, one of your friends and sorority sisters sent me this post! I just started a family blog and was asking her questions about all of these things! So thanks so much for all the great tips, very helpful! I just signed up to follow you and I look forward to reading more! Thanks again!

  59. Ally says:

I love your advice! It def. helps give me the motivation to stick with blogging as a newbie 🙂

  60. Becky says:

This is a great post 🙂 Wonderful advice! I'm new to your blog and I love reading it. 🙂
