Motherhood is hard, makeup doesn't have to be.
I simplify makeup for busy moms.

the messy side bun… thingy.

Soo because I have the THINNEST hair probably ever, and I also highlight my hair (shock, gasp HORROR right? HA) I try not to wash it everyday. Close your ears if this grosses you out, but it’s just a fact. Now don’t get crazy I still shower everyday I just don’t wash my hair, just to put a stop to THAT rumor mill.   So anyways,  I try and take it easy on the poor hairs and let them just chill out every other day. SO, day 2 if you will, I usually do some sort of updo sitch, just because let’s face it, my hair isn’t as full of volume as it was the day before AND it is easy and I can sleep in. BONUS
I have gotten a lot of questions recently on the poof, and perhaps this weekend I will have my assistants (taking volunteers) help me make some videos! No promises chicas, I am gonna be poolside 99% of the time, but maybe just maybe they will come your way. I know you have heard that before right? 😉  But anyways, I just wanted to show you this little ditty I threw together this morning, and also let you know how easy it is for you to also do!
I call it the messy side bun… thingy. For lack of a more professional term.
Sorry I don’t have photos of the steps, I gotta get better at this tutorial shindig. But I only decided to post this on my lunch break, so let’s just go with it chics!

  1. I start by doing a little braid in the front, and then pinning it.
  2. I POOF the hair into a side ponytail, either side works but I usually put it on the side with the braid. Leave some pieces down on the other side that you will use to twist back.
  3. Once pony tail is in place you can hairspray and make sure poof is to your liking.
  4. Take pieces of the pony tail and just start pinning up randomly to cover ponytail holder. Sometimes I will tease these and spray as I go to make them fuller, and less see through. (hear me my thin haired sistas?) Use a mirror, three way preferably, to make sure you are pinning how you want it.
  5. Take some of the little pieces you left down in the front and curl away from your face, and then brush and pin back randomly.
  6. Spray spray, and you are ready to run out the door!
The key is to not worry about perfection, I mean it is a messy fun look, just let your hair kinda do what it wants to do.
Now I know y’all are still like but WHAT about the poof?? Well here is a link to a video I did at one point, and towards the end you can see some of my poofing. But I PROMISE a better, POOF only tutorial in the near future. Key is…
TRESemme Tres two hair spray,
teasing comb,
and plastic rollers (seen in video).
If you try this little look, send me pics please!!
Xoxo lovelies.

I can't wait to see the {possible} tutorial on how to do this! I have ridiculously thin hair as well…and I hightlight mine blonde too (yeeks!) Poor little hairs. Definitely will try this look..and I have been POOFing my hair like you since the day you posted your first poof tutorial. You're pretty much a genius so for that…I thank you 🙂

  2. Your hair is SOOO cutesy. I wish I could pull this off. When my hair goes past my shoulders, I always cut it… 🙁

  3. Melanie says:

Ummm. I pretty much love this, and am sad that my super curly frizzy mess called hair could never do this. And I'm loving the earrings. Please share where those cuties came from.

  4. melissa says:

OMG, I have shoulder dimples too! I've never met anyone else that has them. Too darn funny!

Love your gorgeous side bun and really all your adorable hair styles. I'm lucky I can get my hair blown out and flat ironed so I'm not likely to attempt all your gorgeousness. But I love the videos anyway because you crack me up!

    xoxo

  5. Im a big big fan of the side braid, I do it like, lets face it, all time, cause its quick and cute. So this is a cute change. love it!

  6. Raven says:

LOVE the side messy bun thingy. So going to try that. Also, yes please and yes please on the poof video. You can't hold a secret that good from all of us 🙂

  7. Raven says:

oh and ps, I wash my only hair twice a week. Hows that for gross?

  8. Mateya says:

Cute! Love the side bun. So when you shower do you just wear a shower cap or what?!

  9. J and A says:

Love this!! So pretty. I am gonna try. 🙂 But I have thick hair so I hope it work and I am not good at the poof. But will try! 🙂

  10. Caroline says:

Love this! I have to wash my hair every.single.day. So annoying. And while I was reading this, I was doing it to my hair, sans the comb and hairspray.

  11. Christine says:

I just watched your tutorial and learned a lot!!!! I'm so excited to go upstairs and do my hair haha! I have EXTREMELY thin and fine hair. My hair dresser keeps telling me I need some extensions to thicken things up. I have started to not wash my hair every day and on the non wash days- I do something cute and up.

I cant wait to see how you did your hair for the wedding you just went to-I want to try and do mine that way for a wedding next weekend.

  12. Katie says:

Love this look! And I love your earrings!! Where did they come from?

  13. Thanks for posting. The messy bun has always been a favorite look of mine when I don't wanna do a darn thing to my hair.

  14. Mrs. Parker says:

Yay for the upcoming tutorial! Now could you also add to the tutorial list one for DIY manicures! I always love the colors you pick, but I'm manicure challenged & need some good tips! 🙂

  15. Raquel says:

So cute! I'm trying it right now 🙂

  16. Raven says:

why am I back for a third time? well because I loved this look so much that I did it myself, and I am in SHOCK that it semi turned out. I have NO IDEA when it comes to my hair, style moron = me. I'm gonna send you pics of it in a sec.

  17. Rachel says:

Okay fah real. You are the cutest thang!
I just watched that video- I'm gonna have to try it.
I don't wash my hair every day either. Sometimes I rinse and condition the ends, but I get creative on my 2nd day too!
    🙂

  18. Rachel says:

P.S. Hello! Those earrings are adorable!!!

  19. Meredith says:

That is absolutely the best hairspray, it's the only one I use. I have fine hair and it never wants to stay in place. Pisses me off.

  20. Day Old News says:

My comments are working on iPhone, yay! Love the hair, major Carrie vibes in that look. I have an idea for you: link up your most asked but already answered questions I your "about me" (about my poof, about my makeup, etc). Reinforce that PLL brand! 😉

  21. Okay okay, PLL you are making this look very effortless, and I'm believing you girl! I am going to go home tonight and pour a glass of wine … grab a few bobby pins, my Tresemme (oooh la la), a hair band, and my teasing comb. Um, BTW, I'm about to out myself on how I do a big side bun. Have you ever seen those mesh donut looking things? Send me a message if you want more details….

  22. Love, Love the side bun very cute with the braid.
Oh, I and I agree love the earrings!

  23. Miranda says:

Where did you get those fab earrings!!?

  24. Kerr says:

you never cease to amaze me with your hair skillz. I wish I had them!

  25. Allison says:

just like everyone else, i want the deets on the earrings. they are super fab.

i have uber-thick hair, and i have a tough time pulling off fancy hairdos because there is just too much hair! but i think you've inspired me to be more adventurous with my locks! 🙂

  26. Mae says:

Can't wait for the poof tutorial!! I use the tresemme hairspray too, but omg you really need to try the Aussie Instant Freeze hairspray – it's perfection! Thanks for the messy bun look, I look forward to more tutorials 🙂

    xoxo,
    M

  27. Lauren says:

    Super cute! 🙂

  28. Caitlin C. says:

I love this hairstyle! Unfortunately I have really, really thick curly hair.. I'm not sure if I could even get it all up! But this looks beautiful on you 🙂

  29. EricaT says:

I NEEEED to know where those earrings are from!!! They are FAB & I need a pair asap!! 🙂

  30. Very cute! I tried this weekend due to the high Nashville heat, but mine wasn't as cute. Will try again with your tips! Thanks! 🙂

  31. Chrissi says:

This saved me today! I'm on second day hair and I had no idea what to do- thank you! But to be honest, my hair still doesn't look nearly as good as yours does…

Also, I can't seem to get my pouf looking remotely natural or cute. I can't wait to see a ridiculously detailed vlog on le pouf.

  32. Hi honey!! Your make-up looks so good in those pics!! What do you use??? xoxo

  33. Im the opposite-I have really thick curly hair but when it gets frizzy this would be the perfect look!

  34. French Lover says:

You look so darn cute and pretty ! Love that side bun ! My hair is waaaay too long to try something like this.
Oh and that's off topic but I bought Too Faced' Barely Legal lipgloss the other day & made me think of you, since I first saw it on your blog 😀

    Bisous !

  35. Morgan says:

very very cute 🙂 i don't wash my hair every day either. it's so unhealthy for hair, and the messy bun does wonders with hair that isn't sparkly clean. 🙂

  36. ashnmays says:

Super cute..I will have to try this. My hair is long so who knows how this will work out. Looking forward to a tutorial on this cute style!

  37. Amber says:

Love the side bun and I wear it often, but not with a braid. I may try that sometime. My hair is super thick and heavy, so I wear it up. Excited about a possible poof video!

  38. I have thin hair too so I do the every other day thing as well. By the way – I'm a new follower – so was wondering – where did you get your "weave"? Is it a Luxy?

  39. Lindsey says:

oh hay girl, hayyyy! love it … I can't wait to try this out. Just need to watch your poof vid about oh, 1000 more times. UGH, we need to live in the same city so we can swap talents. I could chi curl your hair, put fake lashes on you and you can give me the best poof this side of the mason dixon.

  40. Sara L. says:

Love this! So cute and I bet once you practice a few times pretty easy to pin up 🙂

  41. Dana & Ryan says:

LA LA LOVE the hair! If only mine were longer! I do the braid thing as well! 🙂

BUT…inquiring minds NEED to know where the earrings are from! 🙂

  42. Veronika says:

love love love this! wish i could pull it off 🙂

  43. Alicia says:

I have super thick, coarse hair so washing it often dries it out – I try to wash 3x a week max so I too use the messy bun to hide the grossness! Your version is way better though! Very cute!

  44. MissP says:

Love the messy side bun but hate that my hair is so thick and straight that it never works. You're in good company with all the every-other-day-hair-washers.. I'm definitely one of them!

  45. It looks adorable on you! I can't wash my hair everyday either 🙂

  46. ummm, those earrings are AMAZEBALLS!!! where did you get them???

  47. Michelle says:

LOVE the messy bun!! I wish I didn't have to wash my hair everyday! And I love that I saw people tweeting you after they tried to do it! That's awesome! 🙂 XOXO

A Little Bit of This & That

  48. Okay okay, I gave it a run … what do you think?

    Here's the post:
    http://alizadventures.blogspot.com/2011/06/pink-lou-lous-messy-side-bun-thingy.html

I stole your picture BTW … is that okay? 😀

  49. mrs.mfc says:

I just found your blog today, thanks to April of A. Liz Adventures. Love the hair!! So cute! I must try out this look!

  50. mrs.mfc says:

And those gorgeous earrings you're wearing…. where did you get them?

    Thanks 🙂

  51. Nicole-Lynn says:

Super cute! Going to try this!

  52. Emily says:

    Nicely done! Very cute!

  53. miss t says:

First, yeah for shoulder dimples! Also, love the bun! And your blog! I moved from Northern KY/Ohio a year and a half ago to Miami, and style and emphasis on classiness is lost in translation … thanks for reminding me no matter the humidity, a little poof is always necessary. P.S. what foundation do you use? and blush? your make up is alway fab!

  54. Sarah says:

This is very cute! I think I'm inspired to do this tomorrow since my hair loves to poof on its own in this wild humidity! I went to check out your other videos and came across the one "Kentucky poof". Very random, but I love your friend's green dress in the video. Do you happen to know where she purchased that? I have lots of showers to go to this summer and that would be the PERFECT dress! Thanks.

    P.s LOVE your blog!

  55. Leah says:

Well, obviously I'm completely envious of you and your fabulous hair styles…due to the fact that I consider myself pretty much a moron de le coiffe. But my go to secret on the days when I'm late for class (and can't wash my hair due to it's lack of volume either) are the Goody spin pins. Serious. I fell for the commercial and I don't regret it one bit. Don't know if you've ever tried them, but they are my go-to poolside hair tamer!

  56. Laura says:

um.. u make it sound so simple… haha.. but it seriously looks fabulous. I'm not so sure I'm that talented… but i need to be here soon because my time in the bathroom to get ready is going to go down the drain when we have a little one in the house! yikes!

  57. Tricia says:

Your hair looks adorable, and I LOVE your earrings!

  58. Steff says:

#1 you are so freakin cute! Seriously. I just want to hug you.

Ok. Now that I'm done being a creeper I would like to know where you got those fab TDF earrings! They are gorg!

    xoxo

  59. Jamie says:

Tresseme, ooooh la la! I love this new spin on the messy bun!!!

  60. Ashley says:

I wore my hair like this yesterday & it was quite a hit. I posted a few pics here
    Thanks for the inspiration =)

  61. JelenaDoll ~ says:

Your hair looks so pretty 🙂

  62. Courtney says:

I have done something similar in the past but of course it NEVER looks as cute as yours!

  63. ashleylbean says:

I love your earrings!! Those are precious! And I love your hair tutorials 🙂 I love reading your blog everyday!
I'm starting to grow my hair back out, it's about to my shoulders, but I'm always trying to find news way to style it. Your poof tutorial is perfect! 🙂
    Thank you for sharing!

  64. Rissy says:

I die for a good teasing comb and aeresole hairspray… FML I don't know how to spell that word… anyways…

I do the same thing! because my hair is CRAZY thin too. Sucks doesn't it? Good thing our faces are amaze-balls ; )

    CarissaExplainsItAll

  65. I seriously NEVER would have guessed that you have thin hair!! And I am obsessed with Tressemme hairspray. Isn't it just THE best?!
